Interesting/Bad Color

This photo shows the use of interesting color in this setting. You can see the spotlight is making the audience focus on the two characters in the front, but there's another light behind the white curtain in the back showing you the silhouettes of the other actors. The purple lighting also almost disguises the character who is in front of the curtain. The lighting is interesting because it helps you focus on one part, but it distracts you as well.

I think this could be considered bad lighting. While I can assume that there is "moonlight" lighting the characters, the light is coming from up front. I consider it bad because the moon is seen behind them, so the lights are cheating a little bit. Maybe if the characters were more backlit, then I think it would make the lights a little better.

  1. I agree with your comment on the moonlight in the second photo. I'm not sure which way it's coming from, but it's obviously not coming from the same direction as the moon. If it matched the moon's direction, it could add a much creepier nighttime mood.

  2. Although i do agree with you about the lighting from the moon being in the wrong direction, i feel like the director was using the moon to help set up a mood or scenario, and not necessarily a source of light. I actually really like the second photo cause i feel like the fuzziness of the moon and shadows in the background really help give the scene a spooky feeling.

  3. I agree with you on both photos. The first is such an interesting use of shadow and color that it's eye catching and makes you pay attention to what's happening on stage. I could see the shows getting distracting if they move around too much, but overall, it's really cool looking.
The second looks like an attempt to create a mood that just logically went wrong. If the moon wasn't there, the textured gobo would be perfect.
