Movement in Lighting

This video shows the actor "controlling" the light, and both stopping it and spinning it around. It's interesting seeing how in sync the actor is with the lights; that means that there had to be lots of choreography and practice done in order to match up the actor's movements and light movements. It helps make the actor seem more powerful as well.

In this video, the dancers use light on their gloves to enhance their dance movements. It appears that the dancers are being lit mostly (or almost entirely) by the light gloves, so it really makes you focus on how they are moving. I also really like how they change the colors they are using to match the music and change the mood.

  1. That first video you posted is really cool. The way the actor seems to control the beams of light shooting from the ground is a really cool aspect of the show. Im guessing he had mirrors on his hand to shape the light, but other than that im guessing he just synced himself with the music very precisely.

  2. I basically agree with everything you said for the second video. The lights in their gloves and stick control the lighting and the mood for the entire video, so that makes them even more significant. Speaking of the mood, I think it's important to note how the light color used for the two chorus look like two different shades. If my eyes aren't lying, then it looks like the color gets brighter as the chorus intensifies.

  3. The first video is really interesting to me because of the shadows the lasers make are so different from the shadows that the other lights make. Plus that is just a really cool looking light show and I am easily impressed. In the second video I find it really interesting that they are outside instead of in a dark room to put more emphasis on the gloves. I think you are right that besides the natural light around them they are only being lit by the lights on their hands which draws emphasis to the gloves but also the colors.

  4. The first video you posted is crazy! I think it is so interesting how the person interacts with the lasers as if they are bars or objects he can physically touch. I like the way he makes it seem as though he can move the light. In the second video, I like the way the people on the sides move their lights, so it looks like a wave of light. I also think it is interesting how at the beginning they all move one after another, so it looks like the person in the front it moving in slow motion.

  5. The second video does some really cool things with video editing that I think makes it a little less impressive if you were to compare it to a few of the other one take videos (that is, things like the cuts at 0:29 allow for cutting and editing in other takes). Nonetheless, I feel like this video really does a good job of taking lighting and using it to it's full extent, especially with the choice of lighting color (like switching from cooler colors to warmer colors post first cut).
The first show does some really cool effects, and definitely reminds me of the movie Tron. Between the song choice (I'm pretty sure it's either one of the remixes of a song off the Tron Legacy original soundtrack, or it might just be the original cut of Derezzed) and the use of blue lights to illuminate the character, I felt like I was watching a short dance sequence in the movie.
