Movement in/with Lighting

I always enjoying seeing two forms of art come together, so I was really excited to see how dancing and lighting would work together. The lighting effects are so in sync with the dancers, it's almost as if the dancers are the ones controlling them. And the colors creatic a sort of mythical/angelic scenery

In this video, the lights move based on a person's movement. While watching it, I looked at how quickly the bulbs would change color and direction as soon as a person moved. They created a new scenery in the blink of an eye!

  1. I absolutely love when lighting is used as a physical thing on stage--when an actor or dancer appears to "create" and "move" whatever pattern or image the lighting has formed, and incorporates it into their performance. The moment at the beginning of the first video, when the woman seems to be manipulating that blue light, is hauntingly beautiful to me.

  2. The second video was incredible. The way he described it as being in a movie screen seems accurate. The way the lights reacted to the people so quickly and moved so synchronized in both directions. Its just so amazing how the lights do the performing and the people are the thing that enhances it.

  3. I really like how the dancers look like they are controlling the lights as they dance. It makes the dancers seem more powerful throughout their performance. While the lights aren't necessarily the main focus of the performance, it makes the dancing come more alive. I also think it's interesting how there's only just enough light to be able to see the dancers but it almost makes them look like they are floating.

  4. I think the first video must have been difficult to design in the sense that the background is all dark, and so the dancer herself must be lit somehow without having to appear like there's an additional light source making her be seen. From the shadows on the dancer you can tell that the lights on her are coming from the sides. I like how they attempted to keep her lit while looking like the only light is the smoke from the projector.

  5. In the first video I like the way the light follows the person. There is a magical feeling to it. It is almost as if the light is trying to touch the person at times. The lights in the second video looks like so much fun! The way the lights react to the person is scary but cool at the same time. I like how it creates an environment, more or less, when someone goes in there.
