Directional Lighting

This photo I found very intriguing to look at. For one, the lighting is not from directly in front, but rather from above and the side. This style of lighting allows for the tops of the crayons to the be most lit up piece of the photograph, and it gives a very visually pleasing splash of color to the photo. The variance in the color choice is also what makes this photo great to look at, even though it doesn't necessarily have to do with the lighting. I believe this style of shot is known as a macro, which allows for the viewer to see much more close up to the subject, which is nice for this photo since the lighting also allows the viewer to see the tiny pits and crevices on the crayon tips. It also allows the viewer to see the wrapper in a much better way, even though the lighting is partially obscured on them.

This photograph is interesting solely due to the fact that the lighting is very easy to see where it is coming from. It appears as though the lightbulb is lit up, which is part of the reason why I think this photo is so great. The lighting seems to be coming from above and probably slightly to the back right, which is what is causing that longer shadow from the bulb. Again, this photo is also a macro shot, but I think the macro style of photography lends itself quite nicely to lighting, since you are going to be focusing almost solely on one object in the shot. The lighting overall is just interesting and it definitely plays with the mind a good bit.

  1. Light bulbs are light sources themselves, but this one is not producing the light, so it was an interesting choice to use it as an object of focus. The light makes it look like the bulb is the source, but the shadows say otherwise, which messes with your mind a little, I think.

  2. I really like the second photo you chose because unlike all the other photos, the light bulb is the actual object emitting the light. This allows us to really see the texture of the floor. This photo gives me the impression of a old black and white horror movie with the lack of color and complete black out of the background.

  3. The first image is really interesting because the angle allows for all of the crayons to have light shining on them. I like how there is a focus on the crayons by the camera as well as the light. The light appears to be lighting a small area around the crayons. In the second one, I think the it is really nice how it looks like the bulb is lit up. I think this is even more interesting because the bulb is by itself. I also like the detail that is visible because of the light. The background gives a sense of loneliness, while the rest of the bulb shows a sense of hope.

  4. I like that in the picture of the crayons it the light is making even darker colors appear brighter than some of the more neon colors because of where the light is coming from and where the crayons are positioned.

  5. I love how vibrant the colors are in the first image! The light is of such a high intensity that the pigments of the crayons are popping right out of the photograph, making it super interesting to look at.

I also love how bright the lightbulb is in your second photograph. You can see all the little details of the ground beneath it, as well as the dirt and dust. It creates a visually stunning image.
