Directional Lighting

The lighting in this photo is coming from the side through a window and lighting the ground around the cat with some reflection onto the fridge. It is not quite backlit because you can still see the details on the cats face and front but the light also does not directly touch the cat. This is my cat.
This photo is clearly backlit because there are literally lights behind the subject (the letters) of the picture. It makes the letters stand out more against the dark shadows around them. Even though there are other lights in the distance most of the light in the picture comes from the light sources behind the letters.

  1. I like how the light goes behind the cat. I think it is interesting how there appears to be a glow on top of the cat's head. This probably because of the reflection of the light off of the refrigerator. That's a cool cat. In the second picture, I think the golden or yellow glow of the letters makes the letters stand out well. I also like how the light is mostly around the letters, but there is some light on the ground beneath the sign. The traffic lights also draw the viewers' eyes to them.

  2. I like that the cat is pretty much entirely in shadow, but you can still see it! (I like your cat too!) It also kind of looks like your cat is wearing a hat because of the reflection off of the fridge behind it.

I really like the contrast of the bright lettering in the second photo with the softer light of the traffic light. It creates an interesting dynamic of two definite light sources that aren't exactly competing with each other, but they aren't meshing together either.

  3. The first photo is so cute! But I really like that Trinity sign because it's the lack of light coming from the letters in contrast with the light source that make the word TRINITY stand out. The roughness of the rock behind the light also gives the sign some texture, which has a pretty effect.
