Directional Lighting

In this picture, the light only illuminates half of her face. This side lighting along with her facial expression gives a slightly scary yet angry mood to the picture. I also think that this lighting is intriguing because of the shadows and depth it creates on her neck and upper chest.

The backlighting from the Sun in this picture to display the outline of the man and his dog. I think this specific photography and lighting style is meant to give a sort of heroic effect on the main subjects. I also like the way the sunlight gently grazes on the cars and outlines the trees to give the picture a nice border with a good focal point.

  1. The second picture gives me a feeling of travel or a new beginning. Something about walking into the sunset and the full back is very powerful. I also enjoy that the sun is out of focus, it makes it the picture itself seem very hazy and unclear (but in a good way).

  2. I like how the lighting in the top photo only lights half of her face. It definitely creates a much more dramatic look. It definitely makes it seem like she's hiding something. I do agree that the light makes her look a little angry.

  3. I love the back lit photo and the effect the shadows it creates has on the subjects of the picture. It is a full picture with all the cars on the street but the shadows draw the attention back to the man and dog.

  4. I like the shadows created by the lighting in the first photo. I like how the light casts a shadow on the left side of her body, but her hair, below the head, is illuminated. I think this tells that there are two sides to people, and people are not always how the appear to be. In the second picture, I like that it is hard to see the colors, I think that makes the image more intense. I also like the way ground reflects the sunlight.

  5. In the first photo, the woman's face looks beautiful in side lighting. The stark highlight and shadow of her face gives her a sense of duality, making the image very visually interesting. The second photo has a warm glow to it, given by the sun in the background. It's intense brightness casts the rest of the figures in silhouette, but it also elongates the stature of the man in the center.

  6. I like the contrast between your two pictures. In both, the light is bright and warm, but its focus is different in the two examples. In the first, the light is more harshly focused, creating more defined lines and harsher shadows on the woman's face. This gives the photograph a more serious quality. In the second, the light is more softly focused, creating longer shadows with less defined edges. This image is more picturesque and calm, invoking feelings of summer and love. It's really interesting how much of a different focus can make!
