This pictures uses the light of a candle to shine on the two individuals. I like the fact that the background is completely blacked out and the only light comes from the candle. Although the background is very dark, the mood conveyed is not really scary, but more lighthearted like they sharing a story together.
This is really great because despite this piece being almost comical in their facial expressions it is off put by the lighting being very realistic. I guess what is interesting is that the lighting itself makes the painting realistic and not the subject matter.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of this painting is that the artist stayed true to the candlelight's soft focus. The most brightly lit part of the painting is the woman's chest because the candle is, in fact, at chest level. As your eyes move up the painting, you highlights diminish and more cast shadows appear.
