I really like the lighting in this image because the source is not visible. It is because of the obvious light shining on them and the shadows cast around them (and the book they are reading) that one can infer a candle is in front of them. I assume it is a candle because of the soft quality of light that is produced.
This image is really cool because while it is not the brightest picture there are actually two sources of light picture. There is the large uncovered window and the fire. The two sources of light create a lot of depth in the space and allow for shadows to only appear where the light doesn't touch at all.

  1. The way light is used to bring out the lines of the second painting is really awesome. I agree that it adds depth. I like that the staircase has that dark area because it reminds of real life. It is a very accurate depiction of light.

  2. In addition to the obvious light & shadows in the first photo, I think the candle can also be inferred by how the light is brightest in the bottom left then descends as it travels further out. I'm obsessed with the light-dark contrast in the second photo and how the brightness helps to intensify the darkness ( and vice-versa).

  3. I love the way the lighting positions draw emphasis to the top of the stairwell, giving the painting a two-leveled appeal. This basically insinuates that the floor that the painting is on consists of lightness and happiness, while the upper level is a dark unknown.
