This is a good picture with directional lighting that creates not only where to pay attention, but also allows a ominous warrior feeling.
I really like your second picture of the soldier. I agree with you with the fact that directional lighting really help set the mood of the picture. The way the rain and shadows interact with the spotlight in the back create a glow that adds to the ominous feel. I also really like how the soldier is completely blacked out which adds to the mood of the picture.
