This is In Ictu Oculi by the Spanish painter Juan de Valdés Leal. I thought this was an interesting piece because there is no light source shown in the painting but it is easy to tell that it would be coming from the lower left area. He does use his artistic licence in the lighting of the casket and the globe; they are both well lit though they are relatively far from the light.

This is a still life by the Dutch painter Rachel Ruysch. I find myself drawn to paintings that show a dark place being lit from an interesting angle. This one is also lit from the lower left corner. I think the light is actually very well represented in this painting. It does seem to lack some of the shadows we might expect but other than that it appears to be an accurate representation. I really liked the color in this piece and how she used it to show lighting.

  1. I agree with how the lighting in the second photo is more realistic than the first photo. It's strange that everything except the area in the top left of the painting is well-lit when the light is coming from the left side. The second photo shows more realistic lighting since the flowers on the right show less than those on the left.

  2. I think it interesting how the light comes from the left, outside the painting. I also like how it brings the white colors out and makes them more noticeable. I like how some light can be seen in the metal bowl things on the desk. In the second image, I like the way some of the lighting reflection can be seen on the round things near the bottom of the painting. I think it is interesting how those flowers, if they were in a different lighting, might be brighter.

  3. In the second painting, I like how the lighting looks more natural, just like Briahn said. You can see how the flowers are lighter towards the center, and there are more shadows towards the right of the painting. The lighting also makes some of the flowers appear more vibrant and others look more dull. In the first painting, it's interesting to notice how most of the objects are mostly well-lit except for a few in the back, making us assume there is a bright light source coming from outside of the painting.

  4. The first painting is pretty cool because the painting which seems to be a scene attempting to represent a place lost in time, dreary and dismal, with the skeleton representing death. The lighting represents a sort of window that transcends time and space, therefore being the only thing that can let us see this different dimension.
