Selective Focus

Image result for dramatic lighting play
In this photo, there are two different sets that the character is standing next to. However, the spotlight on him makes you focus on the character and not the two different settings. It is also slightly to the left of him, making it seem like he is in the outdoor side and not the indoor that is washed in blue, on the right side.

The dancer is the focus in this picture. Like the one above it is indicated by a spotlight. This lighting technique is used a lot in the film this still comes from (The Red Shoes). I thought it was beautifully done and very effective in making the woman the focal point.

  1. For the first photo, I like what you've pointed out about the spotlight helps with the inside/outside illusion. I also like how the space the spotlight provides the character helps to predict his next blocking. Also, the single spotlight on the character's costume plus in the middle of a blue wash adds a mysterious tone to this scene.

  2. I really like the contrast in the top photo. Even though the actor looks as if they are trying to be sneaky or mysterious, but the attention is still on them. The light also appears to have a very cool tone to it so makes it seem even more like a cold night.
For the second photo, I like that the spotlight immediately draws your eyes to the dancer. The other lights on the stage let you know they are in a theater, but I like how you can't see anyone but the dancer and the conductor. It also makes the dancer appear as if she is in her own world as she performs.

  3. I really like your first image because the blue of the room makes the spotlight seem warmer than if the room was washed in a warmer light. I also think it is really neat that you can see the way the light was shuttered off to make the line the actor is standing on so sharp and specific. I think that it does a great job calling attention to that actor instead of the actors in the bed

  4. I really like the setting and mood that the first photo represents. Although a spotlight is used to highlight the main character, the dark blue colors surrounding the individual set up a nice contrast between the main character and his surroundings. Also the spooky, mysterious mood is really reinforced with the shadows and use of blue.

  5. The lighting in the first photo looks almost like a streetlamp the character happens to be standing under, classic noire-style and all that. The blues surrounding him really do help to establish that sort of crime-detective atmosphere.

  6. In the first photo, I think it is really clear how the light directs the audience's attention to the man. I also like how the light is a regular light color, but because the background is black, it is not as bright as it could be. In the second picture, the woman is focused on well by the spotlight, but I think it is also interesting how there are the lights at the bottom of the stage.
