Gobos

Image result for gobo patterns theater
This first picture is interesting mostly because of the clear black-and-white contrast in the costumes. The Gobos can be seen in the back on the brick wall. Based solely on my observation of this picture, I get a fairly crowded feeling with this pattern and its chaotic nature. Mixed with the red on the cyc, there is definitely a sense of tension between the two groups here, and the gobo design reinforces the uncertainty of what is about to happen.

I found this picture in a website for a Quinceanera DJ company. I like the consistent pink in the stage and the patterns on the floor make perfect additions to the dance hall, since the pattern adds texture to the floor so that people enjoy dancing more.

  1. I also really like the use of gobos in the second picture. Adding texture to the dance floor compliments the flowers hanging on the ceiling and also adds a layer of texture on an otherwise barren floor.

  2. The use of gobos in the first picture is nice because it makes the background of the scene appear to be darker. The gobos on the wall look like shadows from a streetlight, which helps create the setting. In the second picture, the gobos decorate the floor, and those lights provide the people at the quinceanera a more interesting area to dance. It also must look nice on the dresses of the girls who dance.

  3. I agree with Ivan on how the gobos in the first photo make the scene feel crowded, which works because it looks as if there is some type of fight going on. It is also interesting how the lighting on the left is much darker than on the right, and the actors on the right are all wearing black whereas the actors on the right are wearing white.
In the second one image, the gobos definitely add texture and different lights to the dance floor than the rest of the pink in the room. I think they would help create a fun atmosphere for when everyone starts to dance.

  4. I think "chaotic" describes the effect of the first design perfectly. The added texture intensifies the moment, making me unsure of where to cast my focus. The second design is clearly event lighting, but I really like it! You're right, by adding texture to the dance floor it will be more appealing to the guest's eyes, hopefully increasing the number of people who get up and dance. I think this is a very useful example!
