Mood lighting

Blue | Blau | Bleu | Azul | Blå | Azul | 蓝色 | Indigo | Cobalt | Sapphire | Navy | Color | Form | Texture | Alice - Through the Looking-Glass in Moscow Theater:
This image from Alice, Through the Looking Glass, has very effective mood lighting. The blue makes it seem very cold and alone. The angle of the light and the shadows it creates as a result, also help with this idea of alone.

This image has a happier, more dreamy mood. It is from a production of Much Ado About Nothing. The lighting is warm and gives a welcoming feeling. The lights hanging above head make it seem more of a romantic atmosphere.

  1. In your first image, I agree with you that it gives a lonely feeling to the scene. I think it also gives a sense of hopelessness as well. I think the lighting helps give a glow to Alice's dress. In the second image, I also agree that it is a more happier. I think the lighting, along with the background give a calm, evening feeling to the scene.

  2. I really like the first photo you used from Alice, Through the looking glass. The way the light shins up at the girl and creates shadows on her face creates a sense of fear and loneliness. The color choice also adds a layer of fear to the scene.

  3. I adore how clinical and cold the lighting is in the first photograph. It's clear in by the lighting that, in the moment, the magic of Wonderland has worn off, leaving Alice isolated and afraid, all alone in a strange place. The shadows and reflections on the floor add to the space, making it seem almost infinite.

  4. I do like how the second photo takes advantage of the warmer colored lighting and is able to make the mood quite positive. I also like how the lighting is able to make it feel somewhat like it could be in a ballroom. The first photo is able to express the exact opposite mood, and this is mostly because of the cooler lighting. I really do like how the positioning of these lights are able to create some really interesting shadows.

  5. By lighting the actress from underneath in the first design, it gives the same spooky shadows we associate with holding flashlights under the face and telling scary stories. Alice, and hopefully the audience by extension, does feel isolated and maybe fearful in this moment. The second design does convey a sense of romance, with the gold tones creating a sense of luxury. I like the glow it gives to the overall look of the stage, it adds to to dreaminess of the play.

  6. The first photo is great because It gives us a accurate representation of what Alice is experiencing. The blue light gives a ambience of an otherworldly world and it causes a cool looking effect of mystery and not knowing what the future might hold as far as the play goes.
