Selective Focus

Here lights are used to highlight the one night in the center of the stage. Although other people are present to left of the person, the audiences attention is clearly on the person due to the light. Another aspect of this photo that although other lights are used to highlight the foliage and floor, it does not distract the audience from the central figure.

In this photo, lighting is used to highlight the person in front of the stage. One aspect of this photo that i like is although the spotlight is bringing the audiences attention to the central figures, through shadows and angles the two figures are still unable to be seen.

  1. The second photo is really cool because of the reasons you mentioned. I also like how the light seems like it too is purple, possible lighter than the rest of the wash. Its really cool that it defines a focus that isn't supposed to be seen. ie they are both dark.

  2. Funnily enough, I think that the second image actually does a more drastic job of directing focus than the first, despite being darker. The bright purple spotlight it pulled so far away from the back wall of purple that it actually works as a second layer within the design. Her shadow compliments the darkness that's elsewhere in the design, which unifies the overall look of the stage

  3. There is a larger pool of spotlight in the second picture as opposed to the first one, so that may be why the second picture does a better job of focusing. However, I think the combination of the cool colors and the shape of the wall draw my attention to the back wall more than what is happening center stage. There's action upstage and it contrasts downstage with the one person getting most of the spotlight.

  4. In the first photo, I think the light really draws towards the knight especially because it reflects off of the knight's shield and costume. In the second image, I thought it was interesting how the light on the people is a white light and it fades to a purple like the light that is on the people upstage.
