Dancing + Lighting = Art

This photo comes from the Sydney Dance Company Website. It looks like each dancer has their own spotlight, so I love how they make a full line. Also, using a light from above creates a more dramatic photo compared to front lighting.

This photo comes from an online news story from the Miami Herald. This photo also uses lights placed right above the dancers. The square it creates on the floor visually isolates them on stage. I also like how the light shows up more on the dancers behind the one in the front, so it looks like a visual illusion.

  1. In both of these photos, I really love how the colors of the lights are kept simple. In the top photo, the lights seem to be coming from the sides and above the dancers. I think these lights help create shadows to make their muscles more defined. In both photos, I feel like the lighting makes all the dancers look graceful and angelic.

  2. The simplicity of these lights is what really struck me, and is something that seems very unique to dance lighting. As the story is told through movements, it seems almost easier to just light with whites, as it is so much harder to stick any kind of double meaning into dance. It is usually extremely clear what emotions are flowing during a dance piece, and too much color or complex lighting can detract from that.

  3. I love that we get to see how the lighting effects each of the positions in the first photo. Like the other comments mentions, the simplicity is beautiful. I really appreciate how it enhances the dancers physiques while also letting the dancing speak for itself. Really beautiful.
