Dance Lighting

I thought this lighting was very interesting for dancers because the back lighting solely outlines the dancers' bodies. The viewer can still see  the depth of the dancers based on how large or small the dancers are. With this type of lighting the colors are what changes the mood because you can't see the dancer's faces.

I liked how the dancers are each put into their own boxes using shutters. This type of boxed lighting is interesting to me because you can see the shadow of the dancers on the ground and while they are all on the same stage, they are separated by lighting.

  1. Second photo is pretty interesting because of the shapes of the light. Its almost like a ironic comment on the wild actions of the dancers to have such a rigid shape illuminating them. Also cool because I know how to make that shape.

  2. (I like these not only because you chose the same two pictures as me, haha!)
I adore the cyc light in the first image, as dance is so much more about the body and its movement than any particular facial feature of an actor. It is far more important to highlight the lines and curves of a dancer's body, as that is the tool they are using to tell a story.

  3. I really like the use of lighting in the first photo. The hint of purple at the top of the backlighting convey a very warm mood. Also, the silhouettes of the dancers in contrast with the red background looks very cool.

  4. I think the lighting in the first photo is really nice. I think it allows the bodies of the dancers to be seen well. I also think the way the stage reflects the light makes the stage look like a continuation of the red and orange color; this encourages the audience to . In the second photo, the lighting really let's the audience know wear to look. I think the way the light is focused right on each woman really draws the attention of the audience. I think it also nice to have the shadows of the women beneath them which is like a continuation of the women.

  5. The first design strikes me as something out of The Lion King, it's gorgeous! I love the way that the lights fade in color as they move down the syke, it creates the illusion of a sunset and puts the dancers in silhouette. The second design creates a very intense focus, with such isolated, sharp pools of light. The use of shutters works really well in this case, I think.
